About

Ink & Earth: The Calligraphic Lines of the Riverina

Developed through the Regional Art Development (RAD) program, Ink & Earth is a solo exhibition by Freda Marnie, exploring the intersection of Australian landscapes and the meditative language of contemporary calligraphic practice.

Stripping away the superfluous, Marnie treats the Australian landscape as a series of gestures and washes. Gnarled red gums become expressive brushstrokes, while sun-bleached skies embrace ma (negative space) on traditional canvas and salvaged vinyl and cloth. This quiet threshold bridges Eastern philosophy with regional New South Wales, inviting visitors to match their breath to the lines and discover a shared language of stillness, movement and peace.

Opening Celebration:
Saturday 28 November, 2pm — RSVP here.

Freda Marnie is a contemporary Australian painter who re-imagines regional landscapes through Eastern artistic philosophy and non-traditional materials. Painting on recycled canvas and discarded plastic banners, she pairs carbon-dense Chinese ink and acrylics over gesso. Guided by ma (negative space), her calligraphic gestures bridge physical geography with inner stillness.
