Responding to the removal of Indigenous children from their homes and their institutionalisation by government and religious organisations, Stories My Mother Never Told, from local artist Jenny Ashby, features an immersive installation of large drawings and prints surrounding institutional items such as beds, blankets and swings, brought together with sound and shadow projections.

Jenny Ashby's work in Stories My Mother Never Told responds emotionally and viscerally to the stories recounted by freinds and family, and to her research into the issues surrounding the removal of Indigenous children from their families, and the institutions into which they were placed, such as the Cootamundra, Parramatta and La Perouse Girls Training Homes, and the Hay Women's Jail.

Jenny's work also reflects on her own childhood memories, comparing the freedom she enjoyed with the stories she was never told, and the children who grew up in such very different circumstances. Stories My Mother Never Told combines text and images with shadows, sounds and icons of childhood to create an absorbing and challenging multi-sensory experience for the viewer.
