An afternoon of short videos, conversation and reflections with artist Ryley Gillen, facilitated by Vic McEwan.

What does it mean for a classical musician to re-orientate their practice to be in relationship with rural Riverina environments and its social history? Come and join Ryley Gillen explore this concept and watch short videos he has created around Narrandera, Boree Creek and Lockhart playing trumpet in the landscape and halls of the area. After each video, there will be time for audience questions and reflections.

The video artworks created are part of Ryley's Scene Shift Residency, a partnership between the Cad Factory (Narrandera) and Brand X (Sydney) who are committed to a rural and urban flow of artistic exchange and learning. This residency program gives a regional NSW artist studio space in the Sydney CBD and gives a Sydney artist studio space in rural NSW.

Ryley Gillen is a contemporary trumpeter and sound artist. Exploring sound as a sculptural medium, his practice centres on the musical landscapes we live, share and dream. His curiosity includes the way sound surrounds us as a universal language and how sonics are used as a form of communication, reflection and transcendence. Ryley is an Academic Lecturer in Classical Trumpet at the Australian Institute of Music and an Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre. Beyond writing for ballet, musicals and orchestra, his contemporary works involve recording and manipulating various instruments and everyday sounds to invite listeners into sonically unique landscapes.
