About
Insubstantial Love Stories, an exhibition of work by artist Todd Fuller, explores two stories of forgotten and overlooked queer love from Australian history. His first body of work explores the story of Captain Moonlite, an infamous bushranger of local significance who has become a queer icon after his burial in Gundagai. Moonlite’s final letters reveal his devotion to his companion James Nesbitt.
Alongside Moonlite’s story is 1940 – Based on a True Story, a recent speculative work exploring an intimate bond between an Australian pilot and his guardian during the Second World War. Fuller’s work is research-based, finding narratives that sit at the edge of record and memory. He retells these stories using labour-intensive, hand-drawn animations to reclaim lost moments of tenderness and desire and highlights the queer corners of the Australian history books.
