Hayley Wheaton: Unified
E3 art space: 5 - 15 August 2010
Hayley Wheaton, Trail, 2010, Artline marker on paper
A unique vision of the individual and society, Unified is an inspiring series of works on paper by local artist Hayley Wheaton. Unified is Hayley's first solo exhibition, focussing on the complexities of the world of ants to provide a symbolic representation of human existence. These drawings and sketches show the contrast between the strength and purpose of each individual ant, and the combined strength and purpose as a community.
Hayley's ink on paper works present an aerial, map-like view of busy insect communities. Her technique places three dots together for each ant, and then links these triads together in intricate patterns that demonstrate not only her endurance, persistence and patience in so time-consuming a method, but also bear witness to the industry of individual ants within a colony. These singular elements combine to form a whole that transcends and obscures them, even while relying on their united effort, in a process whose meditative steady growth mirrors the evolution of the natural world.
