Eileen Gordon
Eileen Gordon, Leaves, 2010, blown and sandblasted glass
Born in Norway in 1961, Eileen from a very early age was inspired by her parents to become a glass engraver. Later she completed a broad and intensive glass making education in the UK, which she coupled with subsequent work experience and further study that led her to the art of glassblowing, which has become the hallmark of her career. In 1980 she joined her family and immigrated to Australia.
The early 80's was a pioneering time for the Studio Glass Movement in Australia and glass experimentation and Eileen spent a further three years studying at the exciting Jam Factory in Adelaide. She later helped establish Tasmanian Glassblowers and at this time met Grant who was managing a farm near Evandale. After further glasswork overseas, Eileen returned to Australia and married Grant and together they set up the Gordon Studio Glassblowers in a farm shed in Numurkah, Victoria. This working studio has grown and moved several times and is now a popular showcase for those interested in glass on the Mornington Peninsula.
Eileen's pieces reflect her understanding of the difficult medium; they are skilfully crafted and yet deceptively simple. They show her love of nature, elegant forms and the colours of her environment. She is currently experimenting with a new hot cane drawing technique that will allow her to express the finest of detail in her work
