Resident Artist - Jessika Spencer
Monday 17 March – Sunday 13 April
I’m Jessika, a local Wiradjuri weaver and Fibre Artist. I’m currently based on Ngunnawal, Ngambri and Wiradjuri Country.
I’m the artist behind “Ngurru”, a small cultural business that focuses on Indigenous weaving.
Combining and merging both traditional and contemporary Wiradjuri techniques to create woven work, I produce hand-crafted cultural items and run weaving workshops for all skillsets.
I weave and create everything from woven earrings, necklaces, baskets, dillybags, mats and eel traps through to wall hangings and fishing nets.
Sustainability, land management and cultural heritage are at the core of my work; the majority of my materials used are bio-degradable and carefully collected from country.
Other elements and resources I use have been done to actively keep it from contributing to landfill, and polluting our waterways. I reuse old textiles, rope and soft plastics.
My focus is empowerment and self-determination; I create all of my work with this in mind.
*Ngurru is the Wiradjuri word for river reeds
